For years， our department has been developing steadily. However， the reform and opening to the outside world and the economic globalization have brought more opportunities and vigor to the development of our department. As a universal language in all aspects， English is playing a more and more important role， so is the department in our school. In recent years， with the great caring and support from the university， great changes have taken place in our department with more teachers， stronger teaching capacity， diversity in teaching programs， and more and better teaching facilities. Our department was set up in the late 1970s. At that time， we had only a few teachers with some very simple teaching facilities. English， as a course， was only taught to undergraduate students with not adequate time both for teaching and learning. By now we have two professor， five associate professors， twenty-three lecturers， two young teachers and one secretary， with six of them having been abroad for academic or cultural exchanges or work. They teach various English programs for graduates， undergraduates， students in continuing educations program， in-service-training program， teachers' training program， and so on. Besides the classroom teaching， more other non-curriculum English activities are found in the school， such as the English broadcasting， different kinds of English contests， English parties， the English corner for oral English practice， etc. In order to better the teaching approaches and conditions， the department is equipped with ten computers hooked up with the university network， seven audio-visual instruction labs， one reading room and an English broadcasting station. With more interests for English from students and high demand for English from society， and with the assistance from those advanced teaching facilities， our teachers have been trying hard to upgrade their teaching techniques and approaches to make their classroom teaching more productive and instructive to students. Now students show more and more interests in English learning than ever before and our teachers show more and more enthusiasm in their teaching. As English is becoming more and more important to our students who will have to face the challenge from the development of the society and the world， we， English teachers， also assume more responsibility in our English teaching to meet their needs. Our work will become more demanding and challenging. But we are glad to be needed at the right time. It is an honor and great opportunity for us. As a cooperative and harmonious team， we will try hard to give better teaching to our students while fulfilling ourselves as an English teacher.
